It was in late 2008 that we started planning the events to mark the Ivel Valley Walkers 25th Anniversary. Alongside the actual weekends celebrations it was decided that we would publish a book of 25 of our favourite walks in and around Bedfordshire.
A sub-committee was formed to oversee the book and many months of devising the walks, editing, mapping, and proof reading the book was published in time for the weekends celebrations. Our thanks must go to everybody involved in the book, particularly the "special six" (the sub-committee).
Copies of the book are available at local bookshops and on Amazon.co.uk
The evening of Saturday 6th March saw the fourth part of our anniversary celebrations. The location was Houghton Conquest village hall and the event was a barn dance.
Over 60 people filled the hall all trying to work out their lefts from rights and wether to gypsy or dosey doe in time to the Ivel Valley Band and their caller.
A great time was had by all, the night of rounded off by a ploughmans supper followed by our guest caller (the IVW chairman) instructing us through the final dances.
It all started at 7 o'clock in the morning when 16 brave, some may say foolhardy, souls set off on a 25 mile walk round the Barton area. The day started cool and clear with everyone in good spirits. As the day wore on the heat built up and the pre-arranged water stops became more and more welcome (thanks Jim & Marcus). Despite the heat the brave band arrived back at the village hall, hot and tired but still in good spirits (it was commented that we looked like we were ready to go round again) at about 4 o'clock to a welcome cold drink and a chair to rest on.
The 25 milers were joined by over 25 other fellow walkers, who had also endured the heat to complete either a 12 or 6 mile walk in the sun.
The event culminated in a delicious buffet that gratefully received by all. Again our thanks must go the caterers and the organiser for a most enjoyable day.
